Dr. McCrae is the Chair of the Insomnia Section, American Academy of Sleep Medicine (2007-2010), Chair of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Exam Committee, American Board of Sleep Medicine (2009-present), a member of the editorial board of Behavioral Sleep Medicine, and a member of an American Academy of Sleep Medicine Presidential Task Force, The Future of Sleep Medicine, 2009-2010. She was the chair of the program committee for the first Behavioral Sleep Medicine Conference (Spring 2009). Dr. McCrae is also a founding member of the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine and is the society’s first president-elect (2010-2011).

Dr. McCrae’s research focuses on late life insomnia and insomnia comorbid with medical conditions including: fibromyalgia, cardiac disease, and gynecologic cancer. She has received research funding from the National Institute on Aging; the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases; and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Dr. Smith is a clinical psychologist and executive committee member of the SBSM. He currently serves on several U.S. governmental scientific advisory and review committees, as well as the American Board of Sleep Medicine’s Behavioral Sleep Medicine Exam Committee and the Insomnia Section of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He is an editorial board member of the journal, Sleep Medicine. Formerly, he served on the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s Behavioral Sleep Medicine Committee. Dr. Smith was the Director of the first Behavioral Sleep Medicine Conference (Spring 2009) and is a founder of the SBSM.

Dr. Smith’s research program is funded by the National Institutes of Health to investigate the neurobehavioral causes, consequences, and treatments of insomnia and sleep loss. His work focuses on the effects of sleep disturbance on central pain processing mechanisms in rheumatologic disorders and risk factors for development and maintenance chronic pain.

Dr. Taylor is a licensed clinical psychologist, certified in both sleep medicine and behavioral sleep medicine. He has previously served as the Trainee-Member-at-Large for the Sleep Research Society, on the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Committee of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and as a member of the program committee for the first Behavioral Sleep Medicine Conference. He currently serves on the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Examination Committee of the American Board of Sleep Medicine and as a founding member of the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine.Dr. Taylor also directs an accredited Behavioral Sleep Medicine training site.

Dr. Perlis’ areas of research include neurocognitive phenomena in insomnia, the cognitive and/or behavior effects of sedative hypnotics and the development of alternative treatment approaches for insomnia. His clinical expertise is in the area of Behavioral Sleep Medicine and he is a coauthor of the first text book in this field (“Treating Sleep Disorders: The Principles and Practice of Behavioral Sleep Medicine”, Wiley & Sons) and is the Senior author of two textbooks on behavioral interventions for sleep disorders (a published CBT-I treatment manual and comprehensive text on BSM interventions for intrinsic sleep disorders [in press]).

In addition to his academic endeavors, he has served on the editorial boards of Sleep, the Journal of Sleep Research, and the journal of Behavioral Sleep Medicine, as a founding member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Presidential Committee on Behavioral Sleep Medicine (2000-2004), as the section chair for Behavioral Sleep Medicine (2003-2004), as a member of the program committee for the first Behavioral Sleep Medicine Conference (Spring 2009), as a founding member of the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine, and as the SBSM’s first president (2010-2011)

Dr. Lichstein is past Department Chair and past Director of Clinical Psychology, University of Alabama. He has published over 130 articles/chapters and 5 books.

D. Lichstein has studied sleep for 3 decades with an emphasis on insomnia. Professor Lichstein's research has been supported continuously since 1988 by NIH, private foundations, and industry.
